View: Bad news for West Brom as growing calls for 19/20 season to be scrapped
There are nine games to go in the Championship and West Brom and Leeds are well clear at the top.
A previous meeting of the 20 Premier League clubs had committed to finishing the season which was great news for West Brom.
The same commitment came from all 24 clubs in the Championship.
However, that solidarity seems to be cracking and that’s worrying for West Brom fans.
talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has said there is a “growing clamour” of EFL clubs that want the season scrapped for financial reasons.
He said as many as 40% of clubs have financial problems and need the income from season tickets for the 20/21 campaign.
If the next season was delayed to finish the 19/20 season behind closed doors, that could have serious consequences for the smaller clubs.
Looking upwards, Athletic journalist David Ornstein has said that Premier League executives and chairmen have started calling for the current season to be scrapped and replayed from the start.
That would be terrible news for West Brom, although the state of the current campaign is insignificant compared to what’s going on in the wider world.
There’s no word that a move towards scrapping the season is being considered by the governing bodies but the next meeting of the Premier League, on April 3, will give a much bigger clue as to what’s going to happen next.
