Exclusive: Phillips suggests striker to West Brom ‘making a name for himself’ in League One
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has named Peterborough forward Ivan Toney as someone who West Brom might want to target in the next transfer window.
Toney, 24, has been in incredible goalscoring form at London Road this season, scoring 26 times in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Peterborough signed the striker from Newcastle in 2018 after he failed to make more than two Premier League appearances.
However he has since proven that he is one of the most prolific goalscorers in the EFL and Phillips reckons he could be someone who emerges on West Brom’s radar.
“I think they could be targetted, not just by West Brom, but a lot of clubs,” Phillips told West Brom News when asked about Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ollie Watkins.
“Ollie Watkins will have a lot of people tracking his progress. Even the lad Ivan Toney at Peterborough, he’s making a name for himself.”
West Brom are likely to need a new striker in the next transfer window if they win promotion to the Premier League.
Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin have 19 goals between them this season but both are in their 30s and it is unlikely that they would be able to perform at the required standard in the top-flight?
Could Toney be an option?
It would be a risk considering he’s only been in this goalscoring form in League One but the ex-Newcastle forward could be a decent back-up option if needed.
In other West Brom news, Charlie Austin’s situation has been clarified.
