Charlie Austin shuts down Millwall fan after he says Matheus Pereira is best player in EFL
Charlie Austin believes that West Brom team-mate Matheus Pereira is the best player in the EFL, beating Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips.
Pereira, 23, has been in superb form on loan at The Hawthorns this season, scoring six goals and supplying 16 assists in 33 Championship appearances ahead of a permanent switch from Sporting CP in the summer.
Phillips, 24, has also done well at Albion’s promotion rivals Leeds with the midfielder attracting attention from Premier League clubs and there even being talk about him playing for England.
TalkSPORT have asked football fans to say who they think is the best player in the EFL and although Phillips is in contention, 30-year-old Austin cannot look past Pereira.
“[The] best player in the EFL is Matheus Pereira. He has proven time and time again this season how good he is and will be, followed closely by Kalvin Phillips who will also go on and have a very good career,” said the Baggies striker via his personal Twitter account.
Austin’s tweet led to a response by a Millwall fan who said that the ex-Burnley striker “obviously hasn’t seen Jed Wallace or Shaun Hutchinson” play this season.
Millwall have had a good season and this one support clearly feels that players from his team have done better than Pereira and Phillips.
However Austin was quick to shut down the Lions fan, saying: “I have when we won 2-0 at The Den.”

Although Austin might not have met the expectations many though of him when he joined West Brom in the summer, he has been a loveable character at The Hawthorns and that great sense of humour will mean he’ll always be welcome at the club after he eventually leaves.
In other West Brom news, Kevin Phillips has tipped this exit-linked Albion player to return to the Premier League in the future.
