‘You don’t want to see that happen’ – Exclusive: Phillips pleased by West Brom stance on Leeds

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips is glad that West Brom are not among the clubs calling for a transfer embargo to be placed upon those who have deferred player wages while there is no football on.

Championship leaders Leeds United are one of the clubs who have agreed pay deferrals with their players to ensure that non-playing staff can continue being paid as normal until the season is able to resume.

However that stance has attracted criticism and The Telegraph had reported that West Brom were among the dissenting clubs until Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi said that the Baggies are not calling for transfer bans and embargos.

Ex-Albion striker Phillips admits that Albion could jump on the bandwagon and call for sanctions against Leeds but ultimately, he is pleased they haven’t resorted to those kinds of underhand tactics.

“I suppose that any chance that West Brom get that will upset Leeds then they’ll be all for it but I think, for the good of the game, you don’t want to see that happen,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“You want to see these teams get promoted the proper way when we do start.”

We’re unsure why anyone would have an issue with what clubs like Leeds are doing.

It is different for West Brom because they’re in a different financial position to their promotion rivals but Leeds have taken that approach to protect the income of those who are unable to work at the moment like caterers, cleaners, matchday workers and so on.

It’s only a pay deferral too so Leeds will have to pay what they owe to players once football is back underway.

Preston are reportedly one team who are calling for an embargo and we cannot see why they should have an issue with it.

In other West Brom news, West Ham and Sheffield United have made their minds up about Grady Diangana and Callum Robinson’s loan deals at The Hawthorns.
