Report: WBA & C’Ship could return before Premier League as wage cap discussed by EFL

West Brom could return to Championship action before the Premier League has resumed, according to the Mirror.

The EFL held their latest meeting on Wednesday, and it was discussed that the second-tier could return by the 6th of June behind-closed-doors.

All that is left for the EFL to do is to get the green light, something they will try and earn in talks with the PFA, Premier League and the Government on Thursday.

This would mean that the Championship could start six days before the Premier League, who had originally planned to get going by the 12th of June.

Also in that meeting, clubs discussed a salary cap for Championship clubs. West Brom will be hoping that doesn’t affect them as of next season, with promotion a real possibility.

If for whatever reason, promotion is taken off the table or isn’t achieved, fans may wonder, what does the salary cap include?

It is suggested that the salary cap could be agreed between £15million and £20million if clubs agree, and if that is breached – that club would only be allowed to pay new players a maximum of £10,000-per-week.

That would obviously be a problem for the likes of West Brom and Leeds, who are well over that figure for their yearly spends – both forking out £46million on wages last season alone.

West Brom will be hoping that it doesn’t come down to that, and earning promotion is one clear way to steer clear of the potential danger zone of a new salary cap.
