Exclusive: Kevin Phillips delivers verdict on chances of Saido Berahino rejoining West Brom

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has claimed that he cannot see West Brom entertaining the idea of re-signing former striker Saido Berahino.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, the former Albion hitman argued that the circumstances surrounding the 26-year-old’s initial exit from the club would make a return to The Hawthorns very tricky.

Berahino left the Baggies for Stoke City in 2017 having previously downed tools when a move to Tottenham Hotspur failed to materialise a couple of years earlier.

But the forward, who now plays for Belgian outfit Zulte Waregem, claimed earlier in the week that he would “100%” love to rejoin Albion if the opportunity arose.

Phillips does not believe that Baggies chiefs would be willing to offer their former player a second chance, however.

Speaking to West Brom News, he said: “Of course, he did very well for the club, but I just don’t see that one happening if I’m being honest.

“If I’m a fan of West Brom, I’d think he’d had his time there. Because of the circumstances behind him leaving – wanting to go and play for Tottenham and falling out with the chairman – I read his quotes this week but I don’t think the club would even consider it if I’m being honest.

“He’s playing in a league that’s nowhere near the Championship or the Premier League so it’d be a difficult one.

“As much as I liked Saido as a lad and seeing the qualities he had, I don’t think the club would even entertain it if I’m being honest.”

Berahino scored 36 goals across 121 appearances for the Baggies in all competitions before leaving in 2017, but has seen his form slump in the years since his departure.

An underwhelming spell with Stoke yielded just five goals in 56 outings, leading to his release by the Potters last summer.
