View: Official EFL statement surely outlines big boost for West Brom promotion hopes
West Brom might just have received their biggest boost yet in the battle to be promoted back to the Premier League this summer.
The Baggies released an official EFL statement on the matter on Thursday afternoon, and it will be music to the ears of anxious fans everywhere.
The club shed light on an EFL Board meeting held on Wednesday, and outline the framework by which the Championship season may be concluded amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
And except from the statement reads: “Resuming the 2019/20 season with the existing format remains the most appropriate course of action from a sporting integrity perspective, but the Board accepts there are circumstances that may lead to curtailment, or a situation subsequently transpires whereby the season is unable to conclude.
“This means that in the event of an early curtailment: A) Final divisional placings should be determined on unweighted points per game (if required). B) Promotion and relegation should be retained.”
Clubs will be asked to consider the points put forward, before voting on whether or not to make the regulations official.
The statement also suggests that the EFL will consider a 51% majority enough to pass a motion on ending the season early.
In short, this could be a win-win situation for West Brom.
Provided these regulations are passed by Championship clubs, the Baggies would be in a position to secure promotion regardless of if the season is finished as initially planned.
If our remaining nine matches can be played, brilliant.
Everybody associated with the club would surely much rather secure a top flight return on the pitch.
But if it is decided that those games cannot be played, these regulations would at least give us the safety net of knowing that we would still finish in the top two thanks to a points per game average, and that promotion will be enforced.
Hopefully, we can begin to relax a little bit after this latest update.
