‘Absolutely yes’ – Championship club owner issues public support to West Brom restart hopes
Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown has issued his public support to West Brom in their bid to finish the Championship fixture schedule.
The Baggies are expected to vote in favour of the second tier restarting its campaign when the EFL calls a ballot on the matter.
And Lansdown, who is majority shareholder of the Robins, has made it very clear that he intends to follow suit.
Speaking to BBC Points West (17.44), he said: “Absolutely yes, as long as it’s safe, we want to finish the season, just for the general integrity of the game and the league.
“We have a TV deal to conclude, which we want to do and that’s another good reason of finishing the season, and hopefully we’ll be able to do that.
“The feedback I’ve had that with the odd exception every team and every club is wanting to complete the season including those who would benefit if they didn’t.”
This will be music to the ears of everybody associated with Albion.
Despite an EFL statement earlier in the week outlining their preference for deciding league standings on a points per game average if the Championship has to be curtailed early, it is still abundantly clear that the most assured way for West Brom to secure their place in the Premier League next season is to win it on the field.
The Sun journalist Alan Nixon tweeted on Saturday claiming that a majority of clubs in the division “want to play” rather than ending proceedings early, and Lansdown’s comments hopefully show that there is some substance to his report.
Staging any remaining matches is still the fairest way of deciding the outcome of the campaign, and it would appear that there is an appetite for that to happen.
That can only be a good thing.
