‘Very soon’ – Sun journo issues update that would be big boost for West Brom promotion bid

West Brom and other Championship clubs are scheduled to resume contact training “very soon”, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Sides in the second tier have begun testing playing staff for Covid-19 this week ahead of a proposed resumption of training on Monday.

Those sessions would be strictly monitored and would heavily focus on small group work that would not require physical contact between players and coaches.

But Nixon has suggested that the EFL could sanction a step up in preparations for clubs in the near future as they look to get ready for an eventual return to competitive action.

Writing in a tweet on his personal Twitter account, the reliable journalist said: “Contact training due to get go-ahead very soon”.

If this proves to be the case, then it would be a positive step towards West Brom finishing their Championship season.

Shortly after posting his tweet on contact training, Nixon shared another update, reaffirming his belief that the “majority” of clubs in the second tier are eager to complete their fixture schedules as initially planned.

And the two pieces of information, taken in tandem, could spell great news for the Baggies.

No matter how strong the desire is for matches to be played, there is no way it will happen until the relevant governing bodies deem it safe to do so.

The fact that the EFL are reportedly willing to allow contact in training scenarios would seemingly suggest that we are approaching that point.

The most watertight way that Albion can ensure their return to the top flight next season is still by playing the rest of their matches and earning their spot.

A points per game average would still get us there, but this way there could be no argument that we deserved it.

Hopefully, Nixon’s update shows that we are one step closer to realising that ambition.
