‘I thought it was a hangover’ – West Brom star details battle against COVID-19 symptoms

Charlie Austin has revealed he initially thought he had a hangover when the West Brom forward suffered with symptoms consistent to coronavirus.

In March, the 30-year-old striker told the Telegraph that he suffered with coronavirus-like symptoms after attending the Cheltenham racing festival.

Austin shared how his temperature soared to 39.7C and that he isolated himself from the rest of his family while the symptoms died down.

Austin has now revealed a bit more detail about his battle against his coronavirus-like symptoms.

“After Cheltenham I was a bit rough – at first I thought it was a hangover and then it was more for the next two, three days I was real rough. But, I’ve got over that, I stayed in isolation and that was fine,” Austin told Paddy Power.

“Then when I came out of that we were in lockdown. But, we’ve had three weeks at home and it was nice to spend time with the wife and the kids because you’re not always at home with football.”

Austin, like everyone else connected with West Brom, is now hoping that football can continue as soon as possible.

On Sunday, the EFL confirmed that only two people out of over 1,000 tested positive for COVID-19 in the first round of testing and players are set to return to training in small groups of four or five from Monday onwards.

Austin is no doubt pleased that he’ll be able to train with his team-mates next week.

“It’s a bit of a strange situation training on your own, it’s boring. The quicker we can get back the better,” the former Southampton player added.

It has been almost three months since West Brom drew 0-0 against Swansea in their final match before the coronavirus pandemic led to the Championship season being suspended.

Slaven Bilic’s side sit second in the table and six points clear of third-placed Fulham, a team who the Baggies still have to play at The Hawthorns as one of their remaining nine games.
