Club owner puts detailed plan for 19/20 season to EFL that would see West Brom promoted

Tranmere owners Mark and Nicola Palios have put forward a very detailed five-point plan to the EFL that outlines how the current season should be concluded.

The EFL is set for a meeting today and recommendations have already been set down which would see either leagues play on or be concluded on a points-per-game basis.

That would see Tranmere relegated despite a terrific run of current form that’s seen them win three games in a town.

The five-point plan is heavily maths-based but the key point is that the Tranmere owners believe that if leagues can’t be completed they should be concluded on PPG with one caveat.

As detailed in the official Tranmere statement, the caveat claims that after the points-per-game calculation, “There is then applied to the table the statistical average actual margin for error over the last 3 years (being +6.3 or – 5.45%).”

Teams should only be promoted and relegated if they are still in the top three or drop zone after that calculation has been made, although the Tranmere statement makes clear they would prefer relegation was taken off the table.

What would this mean for West Brom?

There’s a lot of sympathy in the football world for Tranmere, who are being held up as the club set to suffer the most if League One is abandoned and decided on PPG.

Under their proposal, West Brom and Leeds would be promoted automatically if the season was abandoned, with both teams remaining in the top two after the margin of error is applied.

So, no drama then.

And it looks really likely that the Championship will play on anyway, with a majority of clubs set to vote to kick games off again in June.

The EFL has already set its recommendations and we don’t think that the Tranmere plan will gain anything but more sympathy from the majority of the EFL clubs.

It’s well-argued though and, actually, a mathematical margin of error does make sense, even if it does complicate the issue.
