'100%' - Exclusive: Pundit tips in-demand PL 'Target man' to be on West Brom shortlist
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has suggested that West Brom will have their eyes on Josh King in the summer if they win promotion and Bournemouth are relegated.
King, 28, has struggled with injuries this season and has managed to score just four goals in 19 Premier League appearances.
However, that hasn’t stopped four of the big-six Premier League clubs from eyeing up a swoop to sign the Norway international, who will enter the final year of his contract in the summer and is likely to leave Bournemouth [Sky Sports].
Phillips would like to see West Brom join the race to sign the former Manchester United forward in the next transfer window but he admits it will be tough to land such an in-demand striker.
“100 per cent,” Phillips told West Brom News when asked if King should interest the Baggies. “He’s a good player but if top-six teams are supposedly after him, they’re going to have to battle if they really want him and you might have to pay over the odds.
“King is the sort of player who’s got experience in the Premier League who can play in the Premier League and score goals in the Premier League. It’s just getting the best out of them.
“King’s a little bit quiet, he’s had a few injuries, but on his day he’s a right handful and he’s a good target man as well.
“He’s a player who would certainly be on your radar, if not top of the list.”
King has done well for Bournemouth over the past few years with the Norwegian forward netting 46 goals in 154 Premier League appearances.
That is not a bad tally by any means for a striker playing for a team that has averaged a 12th-placed finish in their four completed top-flight seasons and is currently in the relegation zone.
West Brom need to sign a new striker or two if they win promotion and if King is affordable, he is certainly someone Luke Dowling should have his eyes on.
In other West Brom news, some fans want the club to sell this £8million player to fund a move for Vedat Muriqi.
