EFL deliver official update on proposed West Brom restart, outline Ch’ship voting intention
The EFL have confirmed that a majority of Championship clubs are keen to resume their league campaign, essentially ensuring that West Brom will be able to complete their remaining nine fixtures.
The governing body released a statement on Friday that claimed the second tier is overwhelmingly in favour of getting matches up and running again.
But the measure will still need to be rubber-stamped by an official vote, which is now expected to take place on June 8th, having been pushed back from June 1st.
An expert from the EFL’s statement reads: “The Board has to date been consistent in its approach that playing out the remainder of Season 2019/20 when it is safe to do so is the preferred position, and whilst the Championship have advised of their intentions to resume fixtures, League Two Clubs have indicated their preference to curtail the season.
“At present Clubs in League One are still undecided.”
This is probably the most concrete update we have had yet on the Baggies’ campaign, and should be cause for real optimism.
Of course, there is still the matter of an official vote to be taken into account, but for the EFL to release a statement like this, it would be a massive shock if the motion on restarting the season didn’t pass comfortably.
That is ultimately the outcome that Albion have been hoping for throughout this crisis, and would finally give us the opportunity to put the finishing touches to our promotion push.
The only other question now is when the things will get back under way.
Charlton Athletic sporting director Steven Gallen has seemingly hinted at a late June return, while Gary Neville has also been quoted on his belief that we could see a comeback “pretty quickly” after the Premier League resumes on June 17th.
All of that is fantastic news for the Baggies.
