‘The wait is over’ – Government issue update with direct bearing on West Brom restart plans
The government have paved the way for West Brom to complete their Championship campaign by confirming that competitive sport will be allowed to go ahead from June 1st.
The EFL have made it very clear that it has always been their preference for the second tier to be concluded on the pitch as initially planned, while the Premier League have already set a return date of June 17th for their season to restart.
But while the expectation has been for fixtures to resume for some time now, the government have now moved to rubber-stamp those plans.
As quoted by Sky Sports, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden, said: “The wait is over. Live British sport will shortly be back on in safe and carefully controlled environments.
“This guidance provides the safe framework for sports to resume competitions behind closed doors. It is now up to individual sports to confirm they can meet these protocols and decide when it’s right for them to restart.
“This is a significant moment for British sport. By working with clinicians every step of the way, we are creating the safest possible environments for everyone involved.”
This is fantastic news for West Brom and their promotion push.
In truth, it would have been something of a shock if the government hadn’t agreed to allow professional sport to return, but having it confirmed means that the Baggies can really look to push ahead with their plans to restart their campaign.
We heard from the EFL earlier in the week, with the governing body remaining confident that a majority of Championship clubs will vote to resume action when the matter is put to a ballot on June 8th.
Now, with this update from the government too, it feels as if Albion will get to play their remaining nine matches.
