‘Light at the end of the tunnel’ – Exclusive: Phillips details West Brom boost after EFL update

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips is encouraged by the low number of positive coronavirus tests there have been in the Championship.

On Saturday, 10 more positive cases were confirmed from eight Championship clubs after 1,058 individuals were tested.

It is a very small number of people who are testing positive and with there no being any new positive cases in the latest round of Premier League testing, Phillips is hopeful that the Championship isn’t too far behind the top-flight in terms of a restart date.

“When you think of the number of people who are involved and the number of players in the Championship, to have that number of positive tests is encouraging. It’s unfortunate for those who’ve tested positive but they’ll be quarantined and we hope they get better,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“It’s encouraging that the Premier League has voted unanimously to go back to contact training so there is light at the end of the tunnel and we hope from the Championship’s point of view, they’re not far behind.

“I just hope that these cases don’t set back the Championship because we’d like to see it fall in line with the Premier League. We’d like them to finish together but they probably won’t.”

West Brom are itching to be able to continue with the rest of the Championship season so they can play out all nine of their remaining fixtures and, hopefully, complete their bid to win automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Slaven Bilic’s side are six points clear of third-placed Fulham as it stands and Fulham are one of the clubs who have confirmed some positive tests among their squad and staff.

Hopefully the low number of positive tests means that the Championship season can resume soon but the EFL do seem to be behind the Premier League in how they are progressing.

In other West Brom news, Albion are in the hunt to sign this striker who is nicknamed ‘The Tank’.
