Sun journo outlines five end of season proposals facing West Brom in decisive vote next week
West Brom and other EFL clubs are facing five proposals over how the 2019/20 season should be concluded, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.
The governing body have made it clear that it is their preference for matches to go ahead as initially planned, with a restart date of June 20th pencilled in for the Championship.
In the event of the season being curtailed early league chiefs would rather decide things on the basis of a points per game average.
But clubs will still be able to vote on the matter, with the results set to be announced next Tuesday.
And writing on his personal Twitter account, Nixon outlined the five potential alternatives that the EFL are also considering.
He said: “EFL proposals. Idiot’s guide. I’m that idiot.
“1. No relegation anywhere. 2. Points per game alternatives. 3. How [to] work out PPG when been a points penalty. 4. No League Two relegation. 5. Playoffs in League One.
“So EFL listening to all ideas. But still likely THEIR plan wins…”
Leeds Live expand further on those points, suggesting that scrapping relegation entirely would leave the Premier League in a strong position to refuse promotion to the top flight this summer.
The local outlet also claims that there is a debate to be had over whether any potential PPG average should be “unweighted”, or whether it should be adjusted to account for home and away matches.
There are certainly positives and negatives to be taken from Nixon’s update.
On the one hand, the prospect of relegation being scrapped is a worrying one from a West Brom perspective.
In that instance, the EFL would set a precedent that the Premier League could use against them in the debate over promotion this summer.
That being said, Nixon seems fairly adamant that the governing body’s own preference – finishing the season on the pitch and turning to a PPG average as a last resort – is still the most likely course of action.
That would also be the outcome that would benefit West Brom the most, simplifying the whole promotion debate hugely, as well as giving them an opportunity to win their return to the top flight on the pitch.
