TalkSPORT pundit hits out at ‘unfair’ method of deciding season that would promote West Brom

Former Wolves midfielder Jamie O’Hara has claimed that promoting West Brom on the basis of a points per game average this season would be “unfair”.

The Championship is expected to resume on June 20th, but the prospect of deciding league standings by PPG still remains a possibility if it becomes apparent that concluding the season on the pitch is not doable.

As things stand, Albion would be promoted if things were to be finalised by an average points tally.

west bromBut O’Hara has argued that he would rather see the campaign voided than settled in such a manner.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I don’t agree with the whole points per game thing.

“For me, you either finish it properly or don’t finish it at all. The points per game thing doesn’t work for me. It’s unfair.

“For teams to relegated from that, it’s a tough one. How do they come back, because financially it is a difficult situation?

“Points per game is not the answer, and I wouldn’t want to relegate teams – or promote teams – on that basis.”

We can all agree that points per game would be far from ideal for anybody involved.

Even West Brom, who would stand to benefit more than anybody from ending the season early and deciding it by PPG, are expected to vote in favour continuing the campaign later this month.

But voiding the season, as O’Hara is advocating for here, would be much more unfair.

Scrapping promotion and relegation would essentially punish those sides who have performed well this season and reward teams that have played poorly.

In no way is that a fair thing to do.

Of course, anything other than playing the campaign to completion will lead to somebody somewhere feeling aggrieved, but if the worst comes to the worst and it has to be curtailed early, it shouldn’t be West Brom who bear the brunt of that decision.
