Merson claims he will be ‘amazed’ if reported West Brom target doesn’t have new club lined up

Paul Merson has claimed that he will be “amazed” if reported West Brom target Lyle Taylor hasn’t already got a move lined up this summer.

The 30-year-old has made headlines this week after Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer revealed that he is refusing to play for the Addicks again when the Championship season returns later this month.

The forward is available to leave The Valley on a free transfer in the coming weeks, and Sky Sports have suggested that West Brom are one of the clubs keen on snapping him up.

And Merson has not only offered his support to the hitman, but also suggested that he may have already made a decision on where his next destination may be.

Writing in a column for the Daily Star, he said: “I can understand where Lyle Taylor is coming from. You’ve got to remember. He’s 30 years old.

“He’s got the chance of a big move where he can earn enough money to sort out his family for the rest of their lives.

“It’s a short career. He’s probably only got two or three years left. He needs to get his family sorted while he can.

“I’d be amazed if he doesn’t already have a club lined up to be honest. Why risk all that by getting injured when your contract ends in a couple of weeks?”

We’re inclined to agree with Merson on this one.

Bowyer made it very clear that Taylor is on the cusp of a “life-changing” move, the kind of admission a manager only makes when he knows something is going on behind the scenes.

While there may be a number of clubs interested in him, there is no reason to suggest that Taylor couldn’t be a West Brom player next term.

The advantage of a possible return to the Premier League could be a big lure for any potential transfer targets, and if the Baggies are serious about making a move for the Charlton man, the expectation of their top flight status could help their cause immensely

In other West Brom news, Kevin Phillips has tipped this £11.9million ace to transform into a “top player” if he joins Albion.
