‘Bigger and better’ – Luke Dowling delivers significant West Brom transfer update
West Brom technical director Luke Dowling has delivered a significant transfer update ahead of the Championship restart in a fortnight’s time.
He has admitted that West Brom made mistakes last year when they only focused on Premier League-quality players, saying the club “probably got ahead of” themselves.
Despite being six points clear of Fulham in third with just nine games left, Dowling says the Baggies are taking nothing for granted this time around.
That means a two-tier approach to the transfer window, which Dowling expects to be very different because of the Coronavirus outbreak.
Talking in the Express & Star, Dowling said, “Last year, I think we got it wrong. We were only looking at players for the Premier League and probably got ahead of ourselves.
“This time we are trying to be calm. Things will look a lot better if we are a Premier League club but you have to be prepared and have lists for both scenarios.
“I will admit the list is bigger and better if we are a Premier League club.”
This is a sensible approach.
If we were betting men we’d put a lot on West Brom going on and securing promotion.
However, the rest of this season is a real unknown and we’ll be a lot happier when we see the West Brom players back on the pitch.
We’ll get our first glimpse of that today as the Baggies take on Aston Villa in their first friendly since training regulations were cleared.
We imagine the game will look more like a training exercise – we’re not expecting or indeed want blood and guts – but it will be fascinating to see how the players come through their first game in almost three months.
From there it’s onto promotion and hopefully the “bigger and better” transfer list.
