Report – EFL strike deal that will see West Brom pay share of eight-figure rebate
West Brom and their Championship rivals will have to pay £10 million back to Sky Sports as part of the rebate deal agreed between EFL chiefs and the broadcaster, according to the Telegraph.
The report states that all 72 Football League member clubs will be expected to pay back a share of the figure, which comes after action was suspended as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The repayments will take the form of deductions over the course of the remaining three years of the five-year deal the EFL signed with Sky back in 2018.
Initial estimates suggested that clubs could be forced to pay back anything up to £50 million between them, and consequently, it is understood that the governing body are pleased with the agreement that has been struck.
By contrast, Premier League clubs look set to have to pay back around £330 million between them to various broadcast partners, although The Athletic suggest that they won’t have to find that money for another season.
Hopefully, this shouldn’t affect Albion too badly.
The £10 million that has been agreed is a mammoth drop from the £50 million or so that was initially being touted, and the fact that the money will be taken in the form of reductions, rather than as an actual payment, should mean that the impact isn’t felt as keenly.
Factor in that the cost is being split between all member clubs – and that we should hopefully have the bonus of Premier League TV right money to fall back on next season – and this doesn’t feel like much more than a drop in the ocean for West Brom.
