View: Latest promotion stats from data guru should offer some comfort to West Brom fans
These past few weeks have been incredibly nervy for everybody associated with West Brom.
The Baggies have been stuck in a state of limbo as they waited to discover if and when they would be able to restart their promotion push amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
With the Championship set to return later this month, it seems all but certain that they will get that opportunity – although that in itself presents a different challenge.
For all we are six points clear of the play-off places, promotion is still not guaranteed, and if we are to return to the top flight next term, we will have to do so through our own merit.
With tricky ties against Brentford and Fulham still to come, we’re not home and hosed yet – a fact we all know all too well.
But a set of figures from data guru Ben Mayhew may go some way towards setting Albion minds at ease.
As per Sky Sports, the statistician believes has crunched the numbers on every possible result between now and the end of the season, and postulates that there is a 90% chance of the Baggies finishing in an automatic promotion spot.
Mayhew also suggests that West Brom have a 0% chance of finishing outside of the top six, even though they can still mathematically finish as low as 16th.
And while that wouldn’t be an ideal scenario by any means, knowing that we would still have a second bite of the cherry – even if the worst came to the worst and we blew that 90% likelihood – is a real source of solace.
Of course, anything can happen in football, but it would take a catastrophe for us to miss out on a Premier League return at this stage.
In other West Brom news, an ex-England international has declared his interest in the Under-23s manager job.
