‘A bit odd’ – Athletic journalist reacts to Sky Sports plans as West Brom games confirmed
Athletic journalist Steve Madeley has said that Sky aren’t planning to show midweek games on the red button, which he suggested was “odd”.
The first block of Sky’s Championship games have been confirmed following the fixture release on Monday lunchtime.
West Brom welcome Birmingham to the Hawthorns a week on Saturday, with that game set for Sky coverage, along with the Brentford clash the following Friday.
However, only six West Brom games can be shown by Sky.
“That doesn’t seem to be the plan, Steven, which does seem a bit odd,” he wrote on the Athletic about midweek games.
“But I suspect they’re throwing most of their energy at the Premier League given the number of matches they have to show.”
Sky Sports have planned to show 30 remaining Championship games as well as the 15 play-offs at the end of July.
It has been confirmed that they can only show one team a maximum of six times for the remainder of the season.
The EFL has confirmed that season ticket holders will get coverage through their club’s iFollow where games will be live-streamed.
For non-season ticket holders, there will be game passes available for the price of £10 per-match – not exactly the cheapest during the lockdown.
It might be odd for games not to be on the red button – they normally are – but we think it’s because the EFL wants to help clubs maximise alternative revenue streams during this tough period.
West Brom currently sit six points ahead of third-placed Fulham and remain one of two strong favourites to earn automatic promotion alongside Leeds.
