Report: Crunch EFL vote for West Brom today heading one way as Barnsley look to upset applecart
The EFL is set for a major meeting later today as West Brom and the 70 other clubs get set to decide what happens to all three leagues if they can’t be finished.
The EFL want to finish on unweighted points-per-game but all 71 clubs were given the option to put forward alternatives.
Championship side Barnsley want relegation taken off the table in all leagues and that’s something that West Brom will be desperate to avoid.
Promotion will probably be won on the pitch but there’s always the chance of a second spike in Coronavirus.
Promotion and relegation in case of curtailment is crucial.
Thankfully, The Daily Mail has reported that there is a “growing belief” that the EFL recommendations will pass without amendment.
That will leave Barnsley in a desperate fight for survival on the pitch.
Following that vote from all 71 clubs, the leagues will split up and vote on whether to play on or not.
The Championship has already said it wants to play on and the fixtures announced, so we’re not even sure that will go to a vote.
Leagues One and Two are likely to vote to end the season.
It will be a big relief to get this vote out of the way. It’s been a very long road back to this point and this is the final hurdle that West Brom need to jump – in the Championship, anyway.
Then all eyes will turn to the Premier League, who meet to discuss the same issue on Thursday.
As long as no precedent is set today, we expect promotion and relegation to be confirmed in the top-flight too.
After that, it’s all in our hands and we’ll take a six-point lead into a mini nine-game season.
