Journalist claims latest West Brom figures ‘strongly suggests’ EFL change on the horizon
The latest financial figures from Deloitte have placed West Brom as the Championship’s highest earners from last season.
Parachute payments helped the Baggies take top-spot, with title rivals Leeds United also sitting high in the table due to their matchday and commercial revenues.
The 2018/19 season saw West Brom bring in £71million, with the Premier League parachute payments accounting for 62% of that.
Express and Star journalist Joseph Masi has claimed that these latest findings strongly suggest that a salary cap will be agreed by clubs.
“Overall, though, the report paints a bleak picture for the finances of Championship clubs – and strongly suggests they agree to work to a salary cap in the future,” he wrote.
Comparing the wage bill of clubs such as Luton to the likes of West Brom and Leeds, and Masi could certainly have a point.
They will struggle to match the commercial and matchday revenues of the bigger clubs in the division.
The EFL have confirmed that they have held discussions with clubs in the Championship, Rick Parry even suggesting that they remain ongoing.
West Brom will be hoping to have made it into the Premier League before that cap is potentially brought into play, as they will miss the impact it may have on some of the richer clubs in the division.
The Baggies are currently six points ahead of Fulham in third-place, and with the Cottagers having Brentford, Leeds and Slaven Bilic’s men to play – confidence will be high.
