View: West Brom youngster stakes claim for bigger role with impressive cameo v Man United

West Brom have certainly stepped up their preparation the Championship restart with a couple of friendlies against Manchester United on Friday.

The Baggies managed to beat the Red Devils 2-1 in one of the games before losing the other 3-1 in what was a successful trip to Old Trafford.

Slaven Bilic’s men welcome Birmingham to the Hawthorns in exactly one week, with a mouthwatering Midlands derby to start things off again.

West Brom released footage of the games against Manchester United on Saturday, showing both Matt Phillips and Kenneth Zohore finding the back of the net.

The one that caught the eye the most though was Kyle Edwards, who expertly finished off a chance to stake his claim for a bigger role in the next month.

The 22-year-old is fighting for a spot in one of the Baggies’ most impressive areas out wide. With Grady Diangana returning from injury, it is only getting harder for him.

Edwards has made nine starts this season, as well as 15 appearances off the bench. Bilic is clearly a fan of the youngster, who will need to keep impressing for an extended role.

Only Diangana and Matheus Pereira have completed more dribbles per game than the left-winger according to WhoScored – showing his impressive ability on the ball.

His end product isn’t as good though this season. The 22-year-old averages 0.3 key passes in each game and he needs that to improve that if he is to start more games.

Edwards’ output certainly caught the eye against Manchester United, and he is definitely staking a claim for a bigger role at the Hawthorns.
