Reliable journalist: West Brom one of ‘front-runners’ to sign 22-year-old international

West Brom are among the front-runners to sign Wigan Athletic defender Antonee Robinson if they earn promotion to the Premier League, according to journalist Joseph Masi.

The Express and Star journalist has reported that the Baggies are on the lookout for a left-back after Slaven Bilic and Luke Dowling identified their targets for the summer.

Robinson, 22, almost joined AC Milan in January, but that move was cancelled after an issue with his heart was discovered. That problem has now been treated.

Masi revealed that West Ham are also interested in the USA international, with his price tag said to be around £10million.

“It is now understood Albion are among the front-runners for his signature if they win promotion to the Premier League,” he wrote.

The local journalist also suggested that with Nathan Ferguson expected to join Crystal Palace, Kieran Gibbs’ future is uncertain after a season blighted with injuries.

Should both Gibbs and Ferguson depart the Hawthorns, it would leave only Conor Townsend and it is uncertain how he would fare in the Premier League should promotion be sealed.

Robinson, on the other hand, has certainly impressed us this season and it would be a statement signing to beat the likes of AC Milan and West Ham if both were to enter the race.

Not only can the 22-year-old defend solidly, but he can also get forward and reap havoc for the opposing defence – something Bilic loves in his full-backs.

Look at his goal against Millwall this season in the 2-2 draw, after a long ball forward, Robinson is in the opposing 18-yard box ready to fire home.

With no clear option at left-back next season, Robinson looks like the perfect signing for the Baggies.
