‘Be careful’ – Exclusive: Phillips warns West Brom ace about being left ‘in limbo’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips would like to see Callum Robinson stay at West Brom past the end of this season and has warned him about returning to Sheffield United.

Robinson, 25, joined Albion on loan in January after starting just nine Premier League fixtures for the Blades and has since been good form at The Hawthorns.

The former Aston Villa winger has scored two goals and has started all nine Championship matches for the Baggies since his loan switch.

He has without doubt settled down well at The Hawthorns and Phillips would like to see him extend his deal with Albion rather than head back to Bramall Lane, which could be a mistake.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if he’d want to stay at Sheffield United – look at the season they’re having,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“He’s come away because he wants to play football. He was a great signing for Slaven, he’s produced and looks a talent. But who wouldn’t want to go back to Sheffield United when they’re sitting where they are?

“I understand where he’d be coming from but will he go back and play week in, week out? Chris Wilder has his 11 that he picks very often.

“I can’t tell the player what to do but you’re getting promoted with a side like West Brom. You’ve got to be careful because you can go back to your parent club and not get a sniff, West Brom sign someone else and you find yourself in limbo again.”

Phillips added: “I’d like to see Robinson stay at West Brom and become a hero at the club.”

The Baggies have a number of players on loan and have already got a permanent deal in the pipeline for Matheus Pereira.

Unfortunately, the club does not have a similar option to buy Robinson once the season ends and it will be interesting to see if they pursue a permanent deal.

Grady Diangana might be too difficult to sign from West Ham while Filip Krovinovic is perhaps the likeliest of the loanees to join Pereira in signing permanently.

It is hard to tell what will happen with Robinson but we wouldn’t mind seeing him to join to add some strength in depth to Slaven Bilic’s attack in the Premier League – if West Brom get there.

In other West Brom news, Don Goodman has been raving about Albion’s “unsung hero”.
