‘Unsung hero’ – Don Goodman raves about ‘outstanding’ West Brom player

Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman has hailed Hal Robson-Kanu as being the “unsung hero” at West Brom this season.

Robson-Kanu, 31, has scored a career-best 10 league goals this season to make him the Baggies’ top goalscorer across all competitions.

Before the campaign started, many expected either proven goalscorer Charlie Austin or £8million signing Kenneth Zohore to spearhead the Albion attack on the most occasions but ex-Reading man Robson-Kanu has been Slaven Bilic’s go-to striker more often than not.

Even though most West Brom fans appreciate the work that Robson-Kanu has done this season, Goodman still reckons he deserves more credit than he gets.

“He’s been an unsung hero in that lone striker role,” said Goodman on Sky Sports Main Event on Saturday [03:24pm]. “It’s a difficult job but his mobility has been outstanding, doing unselfish work.”

Robson-Kanu has had a lot of praise this season, especially from inside West Brom but maybe there are still some outside of The Hawthorns who don’t really rate the forward.

The Wales international’s haul of 10 goals in 32 appearances does not seem that impressive for the Championship’s leading side but it is what he brings to the whole team in general that is so impressive.

Matheus Pereira, Callum Robinson, Matt Phillips and Grady Diangana would not have been able to have had the seasons they’ve had without Robson-Kanu’s link-up play in the attack.

He brings the ball down from the air, had good close control and knows how to find a team-mate – as well as finding the back of the net every now and then.
