View: Monday night heroics from West Brom loanee should get Baggies fanbase salivating
West Brom will be doing absolutely everything they can to ensure that they don’t have to go through the torment of the Championship play-offs this season.
But if the worst comes to the worst and the Baggies do have to throw themselves into that dreadful lottery, they could go a long way by taking their lead from loaned-out starlet Callum Morton.
The 20-year-old has been instrumental in Northampton Town’s run to the League Two play-offs over the second half of this season, hitting five goals in nine league outings since signing on loan in January.
And he stepped things up another notch with a match-winning performance in the play-off semi-final against Cheltenham Town on Monday evening.
The Cobblers found themselves 2-0 after the first leg, and were facing a mountain to climb with the an away return fixture to come.
But Morton looked intent on dragging his side through to Wembley by the scruff of their neck if he had to, and a second half brace from him was enough to secure a 3-0 win and an incredible comeback.
His performance went well beyond just putting the ball in the back of the net though.
According to the trusted D3D4 Football podcast, Morton had four shots on target, made two key passes, had a 100% dribble success rate, and won man of the match for his heroic display.
And West Brom fans should be very excited by the progress he has made in the past few months.
To be scoring goals regularly at any level is an achievement, but to show your quality under the pressure of a play-off semi-final is massively impressive.
Clearly Morton is a young player with ice in his veins, and while the jump from League Two to the Championship – or perhaps even the Premier League – next season would be a considerable one, there’s no reason to suggest that with the right loan deal he can’t continue his meteoric rise.
Make no mistake, we’ve got a real talent on our hands here.
