‘Go and get promoted’ – West Brom defender issues heartfelt message after Baggies exit confirmed

West Brom defender Jack Fitzwater has issued a heartfelt message to his boyhood club after it was announced that he will be leaving The Hawthorns.

The Baggies confirmed on Tuesday that the 22-year-old will be one of a number of players who will leave the Baggies at the end of their current contracts this summer.

Kane Wilson, Ali Al-Habsi, and Nathan Ferguson will also depart in the coming weeks.

Taking to Twitter to reflect on his upcoming exit, Fitzwater said: “16 years at West Brom has come to an end.

“I would just like to say a massive thank you to managers, coaches, players, back room staff and the fans who have developed me into the player/person I am today.

“All the best to the lads.. go and get promoted”.

It’s always disappointing to see an academy graduate leave a side without really making an impact on the first team picture, but if we’re being completely honest, it’s no real surprise to see Fitzwater headed for the exit.

At the age of 22, you would like to think that a player with a genuine long term future at a club would have more than one senior appearance to his name.

Admittedly, loan spells at Forest Green Rovers and Walsall have meant that the centre-back hasn’t just been languishing in the U23s all this time, but despite promising spells at both of those clubs, he’s never really looked like breaking into the first team picture at The Hawthorns.

There was a time under Darren Moore when it felt as if he might be on the cusp of a breakthrough, but ultimately nothing came of it, and it probably is time for Fitzwater to move on – for his sake as much as the club’s.
