‘Great talent’ – EFL boss heaps praise on ‘hungry’ West Brom youngster
Northampton Town boss Keith Curle has described West Brom loanee Callum Morton as a “great talent”.
The young striker has played a starring role for the Cobblers over the second half of their League Two promotion bid, scoring five goals in nine appearances since signing from Albion in January.
He then played a starring role in his side’s play-off semi-final victory over Cheltenham Town on Monday, scoring a second-half brace as Northampton battled back to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit with a 3-0 away win.
And Curle has expressed his appreciation for the impact that Morton has had on his side over the past few months.
As quoted by the Birmingham Mail, he said: “It took him four or five weeks to get up to speed. I think he’s a great talent.
“The kid will score goals. He’s got great energy, great willingness.
“He’s still learning, he’s still developing, but what we’ve got within the group is a mixture of good experience and young, hungry, developing players.
“We’ve got some players who have got real ability.”
Morton forever wrote his name into the history books for Northampton on Monday night by dragging them, almost single-handedly, to a huge trip to Wembley.
As well as his two goals, he also had four shots on target, made two key passes, and had a dribble success rate of 100%, as per D3D4 Football.
This was a massively influential performance from the 20-year-old, and one that should be getting plenty of Baggies fans very excited.
Since moving to Northampton, he has averaged a shot accuracy of 50%, a dribble success rate of 56.7%, and a goals per game rate of 0.76, as per Wyscout.
As a point of reference, all of those are higher than Charlie Austin’s equivalent numbers.
Asking him to make the step up from League Two to the Premier League – assuming we get there – might be some ask, but with another decent loan spell under his belt next season, there’s no reason to believe that he can’t develop into a real asset for the Baggies.
