‘Huge lift’ – Emile Heskey issues verdict on West Brom promotion hopes

Emile Heskey believes that West Brom’s win over Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night could be the timely boost they need to see their automatic promotion bid over the line.

The Baggies ran out 3-0 winners in their clash against the Owls to reopen up a five-point lead over third-placed Brentford.

And the result represented a welcome upturn in fortunes following a draw against Cardiff City and a loss against their Bees on Friday.

Three points put Albion back in the driving seat, and Heskey is of the opinion that they should now have enough to see the course.

Speaking on The Football Show (Sky Sports News, July 2nd, 11.45am), he said: “It [the win] was very timely.

“It’s obviously a difficult time, coming back from the lockdown with players looking a bit rusty. They need the points.

“They’re looking over their shoulder, they want to stay up there for automatic promotion as they’ve done before. They’ve shown the knowhow.

“Getting the win against Wednesday was a huge lift for them and it gives them a real big boost to really see it over the line.”

Let’s just hope Heskey is right.

We can all agree that if the Baggies had slipped up against Wednesday then they would have been in real danger.

This win, while not guaranteeing them anything, does mean that they have their cushion back – for now at least – but also helps the club to snap out of their poor run of late.

With six games left to go, you would like to think that our position is just strong enough to see us over the line.

Sunday’s clash with Hull City is one we should be expecting to win, and hopefully that would then give us the boost needed to overcome a newly resurgent Derby County next Wednesday.

In other West Brom news, we’ve found out if Callum Morton can play for Albion now that his loan at Northampton is over.
