EFL boss keen to hold ‘discussions’ over summer move for West Brom talent

Northampton Town manager Keith Curle has admitted that his side will be having “discussions” over re-signing West Brom striker Callum Morton next season.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a revelatory spell with the Cobblers over the second half of this campaign, hitting eight goals in 12 outings – including a strike in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

The Baggies are understood to be keen on holding talks with the youngster over a new contract, as per The Athletic, but the player himself has suggested that he may have to seek another loan move next term if he is to play the amount of football that he wants to.

And by the sound of it, Curle would be more than happy to take the youngster for a second spell with Northampton.

As quoted by the Northampton Chronicle, he said: “Considering the players on loan did so well for us, we will be having discussions with their parent clubs over the course of the summer.”

Morton has been the name on everybody’s lips this week, and deservedly so.

His performance on Monday evening was heroic, and even if he doesn’t return to Northampton next season, he will still go down in the annals of the club’s history.

A loan move next term would almost certainly be the best thing for him, but the only thing that could scupper Northampton’s chances is whether or not West Brom believe their player is capable of taking on a bigger challenge than League One.

This season, he has scored 0.26 goals more per 90 minutes than Charlie Austin, as per Wyscout, as well as having a shot accuracy rate that is 6.4% higher.

The level of football might be more challenging in the Championship, for instance, but the size of the goalposts doesn’t change, and a natural finisher is a natural finisher all the world over.

If it was up to us, instead of returning to Northampton, Morton would be given a chance to step up to the second tier to see if he can cut it.
