Dwight Gayle has once again been linked with a move to West Brom with Peterborough Today reporting that the Baggies are still interested in the Newcastle striker.

Gayle, 29, scored 24 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions for the Baggies last season and the club attempted to re-sign him last summer from the Magpies.

It now seems that with the striker rediscovering his shooting boots in the Premier League by scoring twice in two games for Newcastle, that West Brom are keen on him once more.

However, according to Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi, the latest speculation about Gayle might be something to take with a pinch of salt.

“All I can tell you for certain is that Albion have two lists of targets. One if they are in the Premier League next season. One if they are in the Championship. Until that’s decided any links are a bit meaningless. I know that’s boring but I promise you it’s true,” he said.

We disagree with Masi slightly on this because not all transfer links are meaningless because West Brom might have Gayle on their list of targets for both leagues.

If we miss out on promotion then is there a better striker to sign than Gayle?

And, if we do go up, Gayle could be seen as a new back-up striker for Slaven Bilic.

We’ve already seen the Express & Star talk about players who West Brom are targeting with Bright Osayi-Samuel and Antonee Robinson among them. They are two players who the Baggies won’t mind having in either division based on their form this season.

Going back to the latest Gayle speculation, we just don’t see it happening.

West Brom already have two strikers in their 30s and Gayle isn’t far from that either. He’s not done much at Newcastle this season to suggest he’s any better than Charlie Austin would be in the top-flight.

In other West Brom news, Albion have agreed a new three-year contract with this 23-year-old player.
