FA could invite West Brom and Leeds to play for silverware at Wembley – report
West Brom might be handed the chance to win more silverware if they win the Championship title this season, according to The Times.
Liverpool have won the Premier League title and that means that will be invite by the FA to play in the Community Shield at Wembley ahead of next season.
It is understood that match will take place on August 23 but that date clashes with the Champions League final.
Usually, the Community Shield is played between the winners of the Premier League and the winners of the FA Cup. But, two of the remaining four teams left in the FA Cup – Manchester City and Manchester United – could still reach the Champions League and Europa League finals respectively.
If thye win the FA Cup then The Times reports that the winner of the Championship could be invited to play Liverpool instead.
As it stands, West Brom are top of the Championship table after they beat Derby 2-0 at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night.
Leeds United can reclaim top-spot on Thursday when they play against Stoke but it is interesting that there might be something else to play for for both teams gunning for automatic promotion.
Ever since we were relegated in 2018, we have been saying that a top-two finish is enough and that finishing top of the league is no more than a nice added bonus.
But if winning the Championship title means that there’s a chance West Brom can play Liverpool for silverware at Wembley, then the club should really be pushing to try and take the crown as well as securing their Premier League status for next season.
