West Brom send touching message to Leeds after tragic passing of Jack Charlton

West Brom have taken to Twitter to offer their condolences to Leeds United after the tragic passing of Jack Charlton.

The 1966 World Cup winner’s death was sadly announced on Saturday morning, sparking widespread sadness and tributes throughout the professional game.

The 85-year-old made 773 appearances for Leeds, only representing one club over the course of his 23-year playing career.

The legend would go on to manage Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United, and the Republic of Ireland.

And the Baggies have expressed their own sadness at Charlton’s passing.

Responding to a tribute from Leeds on Twitter, Albion’s official club account said: “At this time of great rivalry, we pause to join you in salute to one of English football’s history makers.

“May this lion rest in peace.”

This a touching tribute from West Brom, and the sentiment behind it couldn’t be more apt.

As fans, we can all get swept up in the emotion of the game, but there are some things that much bigger than football, and a tragic loss like this one is a stark reminder of that.

Charlton will forever be remembered as a legend of the game – not just by Leeds, but football fans everywhere.

Few men can claim to have achieved what he did, and even fewer have won those honours with the style and charisma that the towering defender had.

The outpouring of grief that has swept across the footballing world this morning reflects that, as does this poignant, fitting comment from Albion.

In other West Brom news, Albion could be invited to play for silverware at Wembley next month.
