‘Worst ever’, ‘Criminal’ – Many West Brom fans react to transfer report on ‘massive mistake’

Have West Brom ever made a worse signing than Oliver Burke?

The pacy Scotland international joined the Baggies for an eye-watering fee of £13.68 million in 2017, but has managed just 24 appearances for the club, and has been shipped out on two separate loan spells in that time.

Currently on loan at Deportivo Alaves in Spain, he has hit just one goal in 29 appearances on the continent, and it would appear that patience in him is beginning to wear very thin.

According to The Athletic, Albion are looking to sell the 23-year-old this summer, although they do not believe they will be able to recoup the money they initially spent on him.

Hopes of him breaking into the first team at The Hawthorns are slim, and with his contract set to expire in two years, the hope is that they will be able to offload him for a relatively respectable price before his value is driven down further.

And judging by the responses of West Brom fans on social media, that’s a popular decision.

Nobody can question Burke’s ability, but his commitment and quality of output are consistently far beneath the level they should be.

In fact, former Nottingham Forest teammate Joe Worrall has even gone on record stating that if he had the amount of talent that Burke has, combined with his own work ethic, he would be the best player in the world.

That’s clearly an exaggeration, but the fact remains that Burke is a supremely talented player who continues to squander big opportunities.

Spells with RB Leipzig, Celtic, and now Albion have fallen flat, and you can’t help looking at the current transfer market and wondering who would be brave, or foolish, enough to take a gamble on him.
