Mick McCarthy mocks Slaven Bilic in West Brom draw v Fulham
Former Wolves manager Mick McCarthy mocked Slaven Bilic for appealing for a penalty as West Brom drew 0-0 with Fulham on Tuesday.
Albion were perhaps the better side as they suffered a second draw on the bounce but a point ensures that automatic promotion from the Championship remains in their hands with two games to play.
In the second half against Fulham, Hal Robson-Kanu went down in the box looking for a penalty despite there not being any contact from the defender.
Don Goodman was full of praise for the referee for not awarding a spot-kick while McCarthy ripped into Bilic for his protests.
“Brilliant from the referee,” Goodman said on Sky Sports Main Event on Tuesday [06:42pm].
“To be slightly critical, it’s not what you want to see.”
McCarthy added: “Slaven Bilic’s appeal for the penalty was more aggressive than the challenge in the box.”
We agree with Goodman – you don’t want to see things like that in football.
West Brom created enough chances against Fulham for them to not resort to this kind of cheating that we would usually associate with Jack Grealish down the road at Villa Park.
Robson-Kanu was perhaps pre-empting the contact from the Fulham defender and started going down before there was any foul made.
But he was made to look a bit stupid when there was no contact.
We don’t like criticising our own players but we just don’t want to see that and hope that Bilic has a word with the Welshman for his simulation.
He really should have been booked but the referee let a few incidents slide in that game that could have been punished with a yellow card.
In other West Brom news, Albion have been tipped to sign this Man United player on a £37,500-a-week loan deal.
