‘James McClean officially forgiven’ – Many West Brom fans react to new twist in promotion race

West Brom fans have been hailing Stoke City after they secured a shock victory against Brentford at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday.

Lee Gregory’s first-half goal was enough to seal a 1-0 victory for the Potters, which means that automatic promotion to the Premier League is now back in the hands of the Baggies, who know that a win against QPR at The Hawthorns on Wednesday will secure a second-placed finish.

West Brom lost to Huddersfield on Friday night, handing Brentford the chance to move up to second with one game to play if they drew with Stoke.

But a solid display by Michael O’Neill’s side meant that the ever-surprising Championship threw up yet another shock, to the delight of West Brom and Leeds supporters.

Leeds are now confirmed as Championship title winners and we send our congratulations to them but this is also monumental for the Baggies, whose fans have been showing their support for Stoke on Twitter after the latest twist in the promotion race.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

It had to be Stoke who did this, didn’t it?

Leeds fans were praying on their rivals to do them a favour on Friday and Albion fans were praying their Midlands rivals would do them a favour 24 hours later.

Brentford will now want their West London rivals QPR to help them out on Wednesday when West Brom play them at The Hawthorns.

But this is a perfect game for Slaven Bilic’s side.

They cannot mess this up now. Can they?
