View: Reported CL club interest in mooted West Brom target could spell trouble
Thursday was an evening to forget for West Brom, to say the very least.
Not only did they lose to Huddersfield Town – handing Leeds United promotion and throwing their own hopes of going up into serious jeopardy – but they also look top have serious competition for one of their reported summer transfer targets.
According to the Birmingham Mail, the Baggies hold an interest in QPR winger Bright Osayi-Samuel, after initially considering a swoop for the player in the January transfer window.
But Belgian outlet HLN have reported that Champions League side Club Brugge are eager to make a move for the wide man this summer, and could fork out up to £5 million to land him.
And that should be a concern for Albion.
If they are to firm up their interest in the player over the coming weeks, they could really do with as little competition as possible for his signature.
£5 million isn’t a ridiculous amount of money, especially for a player who has registered a pass completion rate that is 0.9% better than Grady Diangana’s in 2019/20, as well as averaging 1.8% more successful dribbles too, as per Wyscout.
Osayi-Samuel also completes a massive 26% more long passes than the West Ham loanee.
But more concerning than his price tag is the very real possibility that Albion could be outmuscled in terms of their status.
With our automatic promotion hopes now hanging by a thread, there is every chance that we could go into any prospective transfer battle for Osayi-Samuel offering him Championship football, while the Belgians could offer him Champions League action.
Those are the obstacles we’re dealing with here, and they’re going to be made a lot harder to overcome if we can’t get over the line in terms of securing a spot in the Premier League.
