View: West Brom have surely shot themselves in the foot in Grady Diangana pursuit

The ramifications of West Brom missing out on automatic promotion this season could have real negative effects on their transfer plans.

It goes without saying that it is easier to attract top quality talent if you’re a club playing in the top flight, not just because of the increase in status but because of the financial boost it brings too.

And of course, one of the main transfer targets that West Brom will have this summer is Grady Diangana.

The West Ham loanee has been mightily impressive since he signed last summer, and it’s little surprise to hear that the Baggies would be eager to re-sign him for next season, as per The Sun.

But the chances of that happening will be seriously dented by a failure to reach the top flight – not just because of Albion’s diminished appeal, but also because of what it could mean for West Ham’s transfer plans.

Aside from the fact that The Sun suggest that the Hammers would be keen to keep hold of their asset, West Brom failing to go up could also prevent David Moyes’ men from making a move for a couple of alternative targets.

If Albion miss out on automatic promotion, the chances are that it will be Brentford who go up in their place.

According to a separate report from The Sun, as well as a claim from trusted insider ExWHUemployee, the Irons are keen on Brentford duo Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma.

The chances of luring either of those players away from Griffin Park if their current employers make it out of the Championship this season would surely be greatly decreased, and that could also put the kibosh on Albion signing Diangana.

Both Benrahma and Watkins occupy similar areas of the pitch to Diangana, and it’s hard to see West Ham letting go of the prospect without securing a suitable replacement first.

The Baggies look as if they might just have shot themselves in the foot here.
