Final day permutations and what it would take for West Brom to win automatic promotion
West Brom were handed a promotion lifeline by Stoke City on Saturday when they secured a shock 1-0 win against Brentford.
Three teams now go into the final day of the Championship season on Wednesday knowing that they can secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
First of all is West Brom. As long as Slaven Bilic’s side win against QPR at The Hawthorns, they will confirm their second-placed finish and clinch promotion.
Brentford are third and one point behind the Baggies but have a far superior goal difference. If Brentford better West Brom’s result when they play Barnsley at Griffin Park, then they will snatch second place.
But what about Fulham? Scott Parker’s side are two points behind the Baggies in fourth. They can only realistically win promotion to the Premier League if they win against Wigan and the Baggies and the Bees both lose.
In a nutshell, West Brom just need to win against a QPR side who are unlikely to be in the mood to do West London rivals Brentford and Fulham any favours.
If Albion can put their fate in their own hands early on by grabbing a couple of first-half goals then that will do the world of good for their nerves.
The last thing they want is for them to be drawing and hear news filter through about Brentford taking the lead.
