‘Come off it’ – Many West Brom fans react to ‘completely unreasonable’ official club tweet

West Brom fans have taken to social media to react to a tweet urging them to stay at home if their side win promotion back to the Premier League this week.

Albion hold the advantage going in to the final round of Championship matches on Wednesday, knowing that a win against QPR would be enough to fend off pressure from both Brentford and Fulham.

In recent weeks, we have seen similar success for Liverpool and Leeds United lead to mass gatherings of their fans outside of their respective stadiums.

But Albion have put out a message to their fans calling for them to refrain from following suit.

The club tweeted a heartfelt video outlining how much they miss their supporters, alongside the caption: “We’ve said it once. And we’ll say it once more. It will not be the same without you on Wednesday.

“We are urging fans not to gather outside The Hawthorns but encourage them to leave scarves, messages and flags at the Astle Gates.”
But many fans were left unimpressed with the message, with several calling for the club to make a greater effort to make their support felt inside The Hawthorns by decorating the ground with more scarves and banners from supporters.
Others suggested that there was nothing wrong with fans gathering, provided they maintained social distancing measures.
In truth, West Brom have done the right thing here.
In an ideal world, fans would be able to gather outside the ground, but as we’ve seen from the scenes in Leeds and Liverpool, it is all but impossible to uphold the relevant social distancing measures.
With that in mind, the club have to do the best they can to ensure the safety of their supporters and the surrounding communities.
If that means asking fans to stay away, then so be it.
But we do absolutely agree that more representation inside the ground would be nice.
This is the biggest game of our season, and to have a more profound illustration of our support would be a nice touch, for both the fans and the players on the pitch.
