‘Such a shame’ – Reliable journo responds to question on key flaw in West Brom talent Pereira

West Brom playmaker Matheus Pereira needs to eradicate play-acting from his game to avoid picking up a “reputation”, according to the Birmingham Mail journalist Joseph Chapman.

The Brazilian loanee has been involved in a couple of incidents in recent weeks that have drawn ire for his exaggerated reactions, with one in particular leading to talkSPORT host Adrian Durham slamming him on social media.

And Chapman has suggested that he needs to cut out the melodrama before he reaches the top flight.

Writing during a Q&A for the Mail, when asked whether Slaven Bilic would be working with the player to stop him from diving so much, the reporter said: “I agree that the play-acting or feigning of injury needs cutting out pronto.

“Think it’s such a shame that he feels the need to do it.

“Goodness knows he wins enough fouls and free kicks anyway, through sheer talent!

“It’s not a reputation you want associating with you, and I know Albion fans on the whole would rather Pereira didn’t do it.”

We’re inclined to agree with Chapman on this one.

Pereira is a special, special talent – eight goals, 20 assists, and the second highest Whoscored rating in the Championship this season would certainly support that viewpoint.

But all he will achieve by play-acting and diving around is making things harder for himself.

The sort of player that he is, the Brazilian is always going to attract robust attention from defenders.

If he then doesn’t have the protection of referees because they see him as a boy with a tendency to cry wolf, then he will get booted to kingdom come every Saturday.
