Exclusive: Pundit suggests West Brom loan return could be on the cards for 25-yr-old

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips claims that West Brom would be more inclined to re-signing Callum Robinson on loan from Sheffield United rather than signing him permanently.

Robinson, 25, joined the Baggies on loan from the Blades in January and went on to score three goals and supply two assists in 16 Championship appearances.

In his final appearance for Albion on Wednesday night, he scored a crucial goal in the 2-2 draw with QPR that helped Slaven Bilic’s side secure promotion to the Premier League while playing as a centre-forward.

Robinson’s loan spell at The Hawthorns has been a success but Phillips does not see the Baggies splashing the cash on securing him permanently and even hints at him wanting to stay put at Sheffield United.

“I’m sure the player has seen what Sheffield United have done this year and would probably love being a part of them challenging for a European place,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“It’s a tough one. I’d like to see the lad come back to West Brom. He looks very settled there but ultimately, it’s his decision.

“If they can get him back on loan it will probably suit West Brom a bit more because they haven’t got to fork out a huge fee. They’ll obviously pick up his wages but that’s probably a bit more of a result so maybe another loan deal could be an option. Whether Sheffield United accept that is another matter.”

Robinson really helped lift West Brom out of a rut when he arrived in January.

Before his debut, Bilic’s side had gone seven Championship matches without a win.

But in his first game for Albion, Robinson forced an own goal in the 2-0 win against Luton before going on to play a major role in an excellent February that has ultimately seen the Black Country club win promotion.

Robinson wasn’t one of the stand-out loanees that the Baggies had this season with Matheus Pereira, Grady Diangana and Filip Krovinovic all bursting onto the scene under Bilic.

But Robinson did do enough to at least earn being considered as a permanent signing by Bilic and we will wait and see what the future holds for the Blades forward.
