Gareth McAuley ‘delighted’ with West Brom despite ‘rollercoaster’ final day in C’Ship
Gareth McAuley has admitted his delight that his former club West Brom finally sealed their return to the Premier League on Wednesday.
The Baggies made it hard work, in the end, drawing 2-2 with Queens Park Rangers and not winning any of their final four Championship fixtures.
There was a nervous wait after the game at the Hawthorns, but there was pandemonium around the ground after it was confirmed.
McAuley claimed it was typical Baggies to make everyone sweat over their future, but that he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Absolutely delighted,” he told Sky Sports.
“That’s West Brom, they wouldn’t do it any other way, it’s a real rollercoaster of a ride over there – do things the hard way.
“There were chances to put the game to bed and they missed it. They put us right in that real nervous position, you’re looking at what’s going on in the other games.
“You see the scenes afterwards, the celebrations, the staff, all the old faces from my time there that are still there working behind the scenes.
“Absolutely delighted their back in the big league.”
It was fully deserved, and only Brentford fans would disagree with that claim we believe at this point of the season.
The truth is, the Baggies were in the top two for the majority of the season from day one and Brentford only really came into contention in the final two weeks.
Pressure is a funny thing, and the Bees had two opportunities to leapfrog the Baggies and that is where they crumbled.
This graphic from the Athletic proves, that no matter how nervewracking it was, West Brom fully deserved their spot in the top two.
