Romaine Sawyers details what made his heart sink after the 2-2 draw v QPR
It has been one week since West Brom sealed their return to the Premier League with a nervy 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers.
Brentford missed two opportunities to leapfrog Albion, with the Baggies failing to win any of their final four Championship games.
Romaine Sawyers has reflected on the scenes at the Hawthorns last week, claiming he thought Brentford had beaten Barnsley.
It was, in fact, Barnsley who had beaten the Bees, with the boyhood Baggie claiming his heart sank when he heard there was a late goal at Griffin Park.
“I came off against QPR and I went from player to fan,” he told the Express and Star.
“I couldn’t watch the game. If someone had scored in our game I wouldn’t have known because my face was in my hands. I just couldn’t watch.
“But as soon as the whistle went and we had that pause – we could hear the media guys talking and we knew Brentford and Barnsley were still playing.
“I heard 2-1 and I really thought Brentford had scored, I didn’t think it could have Barnsley that scored, I just thought Brentford have taken a 2-1 lead.
“When I heard that my heart just sank. But when I heard it was Barnsley ahead, the whole world came off my shoulders.”
Those minutes between the end of West Brom’s game and Brentfords were the longest wait that Baggies fans had endured all season.
Even after the Londoners managed to win nearly 10 games in-a-row, it would have been so harsh on the Baggies to miss out when they had been in the top-two since the start of the season.
This graphic proves the dominance of Slaven Bilic’s men, and it would have been hard to recover from if they had missed out on the final day.
