We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has claimed that Watford striker Troy Deeney would “jump at the chance” to join West Brom in the summer and head back to the West Midlands.

Deeney, 32, scored 10 goals in 27 Premier League games as Watford were relegated to the Championship this season.

Ex-West Brom striker Phillips has recently seen Deeney at The Belfry golf course in Warwickshire, which suggests to him that the Hornets captain would be happy to head to a top-flight side closer to home.

“He’s from the Midlands and I would imagine he’d jump at the chance to come back home,” Phillips told West Brom News when discussing Deeney.

“I saw him at The Belfry a couple of weeks ago playing golf. It looks like every spare minute he gets, he’s back in the Midlands.

“That wouldn’t be a bad shout. You know what you get with Troy. He’s not a prolific goalscorer but he’ll get you some important goals and also, he’s a leader.

“I’m not saying West Brom are going to struggle next year but it’s always a struggle for teams who come up. You always get the odd side who comes up like Sheffield United and have a great first season.

“You need leaders in your side and he wouldn’t be a bad shout. I never thought about that one. Put two and two together, the Midlands and the Premier League.”

Deeney has bags of Premier League experience under his belt and is also well-known for his leadership qualities both on and off the pitch.

West Brom are losing a lot of experience and leadership this summer with Chris Brunt, and likely Gareth Barry, heading for the exit.

Albion also need a goalscorer adding to their squad so Deeney could be someone who’d come in and serve as an upgrade on the likes of Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu.

In other West Brom news, Albion want to sign this £18million-rated English striker.
