West Brom are readying a bid to sign Rangers centre-forward Alfredo Morelos, according to the Daily Record.
The Scottish newspaper claims that Ligue 1 club Lille are set to offer £17million for the 24-year-old goal machine with the Baggies “waiting in the wings” and keeping tabs on developments.
It is understood that Albion failed with a £12million bid to sign Morelos last summer but now they are back in the Premier League, Slaven Bilic has identified the Colombia international as someone who can spearhead his attack in the English top-flight.
And if it’s goals that Bilic wants, then there’s little to suggest that Morelos won’t be able to provide that based on his numbers in Scotland.
Last season, Morelos scored 29 goals and supplied 10 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for Rangers.
Since joining the Glasgow giants from HJK Helsinki in 2017, Morelos has scored 77 times in 137 outings.
While the numbers look good, we have to be critical of Morelos and point out that in three years in Scotland he’s not won any silverware and not scored a single goal against Celtic in nine attempts.
Of course, moving to the Premier League is a massive step up in quality from the Scottish Premiership and Morelos would have to score regularly against far better teams to be able to prove his worth to West Brom – if they sign him.
His lack of goals against Celtic is worrying but his form in the Europa League last term – when he netted against the likes of Feyenoord and Porto – suggest that he could still be a decent acquisition for a newly-promoted Premier League club like the Baggies, who are desperate for a proven goalscorer.
In other West Brom news, Bilic wants to sign this Brentford star in the summer.
