West Brom made a loan announcement on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t one that many would have been hoping for.
Although the deal is all-but-confirmed, Matheus Pereira is yet to complete his switch to the Hawthorns from Sporting CP after meeting the Portuguese club’s demands.
That will come, and the Baggies confirmed that young midfielder Finn Azaz will move on loan to Cheltenham for the season.
Azaz will make the switch to the League Two club until the end of the season, with them bouncing off the back of a play-off defeat in the last campaign.
There are January clauses in the deal which will allow both Cheltenham and West Brom to assess how well the youngster is progressing.
Should either side be disappointed with his progress, they will have the power to cut the temporary switch short midway through next season.
After featuring heavily in the Premier League 2 in the past couple of seasons, Azaz will now get his chance at senior football.
Callum Morton excelled in the fourth-tier at Northampton last season, firing them to promotion and Azaz will be looking to follow in those footsteps and succeed elsewhere.
Slaven Bilic will be wanting experienced faces to help his side settle into the Premier League, meaning opportunities for younger players will be more limited – something that gives them the chance to go out and earn their stripes elsewhere.
Azaz will be looking to excel at Cheltenham for the entire season, and prove that he has what it takes to force his way into Bilic’s plans in the next two to three years.
